A JOURNEY TO THE KEYS,
TO LIFE, AND BACK AGAIN
Like so many artists before me, it took a hero's journey to understand the deeper layers of my craft and how the skills I learned all along could usher me forth into a new creative life.
About
More than forty years of devoted and evolving relationship with the piano have brought me here. It began at five, in a home where the instrument stood as both anchor and escape, a place to go when the world around me demanded conformity and offered little room for the kind of inner life already, quietly, taking shape. By fourteen, teaching had begun. By the time the University of the Pacific came into the picture, so had young motherhood, a full scholarship, and the early understanding that the path forward would require building it from scratch.
Piano performance studies under the mentorship of Frank Wiens at the University of the Pacific led to the ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music, one of the most rigorous and respected credentials in classical piano education. The commitment to the field extended well beyond the bench. As President of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers, a state affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association, and as a Founding Teacher, Founding School, and Center Representative for the Royal Conservatory of Music, the work was always about more than playing. In 2021, that contribution was recognized with two of the field's most distinguished honors: the MTNA Foundation Fellow Award and the Steinway Top Teacher Award. For more than three decades, children and adults have found their way to music through Wendi Kirby Music LLC in Monterey, and through the role of Music Director for the Lower Division at Stevenson School.
And yet, for all of it, something was missing. Despite all the accolades, what was missing was permission to move beyond the page, beyond the repertoire, beyond the version of musicianship that asks you to execute someone else's vision with precision over expression. In the years following a profound personal transition, the practice of making her own music began in earnest, and what emerged through the fingers was a language that had been waiting to come forward. The debut album Bloom, released on UK label Pastiche Records in April 2023, was born from that period, compositions written during one of the most generative and difficult seasons of this life. Wendi's second album Wings, recorded at London's Eastcote Studios and released in February 2024, deepened that inquiry, bringing original music to audiences across the United States and Europe.
What emerged through that process became the foundation of Piano Freeology, a methodology built to give other musicians what the tradition had never provided: a structured, embodied, deeply personal path to their own authentic expression. Drawing on decades of classical training, the study of nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, and the neuroscience of music, Piano Freeology is not a departure from mastery. It is its next chapter. The work continues from a studio in Monterey, California, at the edge of the Pacific, where the ocean has always known something about what it means to move without a score.

WHAT I BELIEVE
MANIFESTO
Music is everything.
Every feeling you have ever had arrived with a sound, a vibration, or a song attached. Playing music engages every region of the brain simultaneously, a neuroscientific fact, and there is no other human activity does this. From the motor to the auditory to the prefrontal cortices, from the limbic to nervous systems, all are in conversation at once. In this way, music is not just something we hear or play or experience, but something that is fundamental to our makeup as humans.

You have music that is waiting to EMERGE.
You were born into a body that hears, feels, and responds to sound before language, before thought, before form. The question was never whether you could play, but how you might usher through the music. In contemporary classical training, we were encouraged into an earning and achievement rhythm that scared many of us away from the keys. My work in this world is to retool and retune those pathways so that what is waiting to arrive does, with ease.
It is time to move beyond the page.
Classical training gave many of us the discipline to read someone else's language fluently. When you play only what is written, you are restating what someone else said. That can be beautiful, but it’s not the full story of your work as a music player or musician.
That is why I created Piano Freeology… to meet that space and open the door and steward what wants to come forth sonically and creatively.

We are here to discover what sound and music wants to come through us, and trust it.
To improvise is to regulate your nervous system enough to allow something through, in music and in life. To inhale before the music starts. To inspire, listening for what wants to emerge. To follow your intuition without flinching. It is both a musical skill as well as a life skill that in this method, begins at the keys.

PIANO FREEOLOGY IS the key to more freedom.
After more than forty years of teaching, what I have learned is that the same keys that intimidated, contorted, and confused us are the same keys that can set us free in our music and our whole creative life. Through invitations that engage the entire body, from breath to easeful posture, and from tuning our listening from the outside inward, we have the ability to set ourselves free.

our authentic, emergent musical voice is waiting just beyond the margins.
It has always been there, shaped by our history, our body, our emotional life, our particular way of moving through the world. What it has been waiting for is not more traditional practice and skill, but listening deeply to what is possible, and stewarding it through practices and techniques that allow for something new and reflective to emerge.
Through improvisation techniques and careful internal inquiries into the creative process, we open the door to the possibilities and freedom of playing our own music.

The piano is the gateway, but what lies beyond is all creativity.
In Piano Freeology, we get to experience the keyboard as the portal, but not the destination. What beckons us through these practices, from breath as part of this journey and embodiment practices to the way we are invited to shift perception in how the keys relate to each other, naturally invites in a new way of being... and some truly wonderful music.

Welcome to Piano Freeology.
This is for those who have played, who still play, and who know there is something else available to them from practice other than the perfection of other composers' pieces. Something that is entirely, unmistakably, their own.

Wendi Kirby is a classically trained pianist, composer, educator, and the creator of Piano Freeology, a methodology that guides musicians from the discipline of classical training into the freedom of authentic creative expression. With more than forty years at the piano, an ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and a career recognized by the MTNA Foundation Fellow Award and the Steinway Top Teacher Award in 2021, she brings a rare depth of mastery to a practice that asks what lies beyond it. Her original music, including her albums Bloom and Wings, recorded at London's Eastcote Studios, has reached audiences across the United States and Europe. She teaches, performs, and leads Piano Freeology from her studio in Monterey, California, at the edge of the Pacific.
